The complex mechanisms at the heart of your car generate the power that carries you over many kilometres. An important part of this complex system is the fuel injection system. But how exactly does this system work and why is it so important for your vehicle?

What is the fuel injection system?

Put simply, the fuel injection system is a collection of parts that ensure that the right amount of fuel is injected into the engine at exactly the right time. In this way, it ensures that your engine operates at maximum efficiency and delivers the desired performance.

Main components of the system:

Fuel pump: It provides the necessary pressure to deliver petrol or diesel fuel from the fuel tank to the injectors.

Fuel filter: It cleans the fuel of impurities and prevents clogging of the injection nozzles.

Injectors: Electromechanical valves that atomise the fuel and spray it into the engine's combustion chambers.

Fuel line: The lines that lead from the fuel pump to the injection nozzles and transport the fuel.

Injector control module: An electronic device that uses signals from the engine management system to control when and how much fuel the injectors inject.

Operating principle:

The fuel pump is activated: When the engine is started, the fuel pump draws petrol or diesel fuel from the tank and generates the necessary pressure to deliver it to the injectors.

The injection nozzles are prepared: The injector control module receives signals from the engine management system to determine when and how much fuel should be injected.

Fuel is injected: The injectors are triggered by electrical signals to atomise the fuel and inject it into the engine's combustion chambers.

Combustion and power generation: The injected fuel mixes with the air and carries out the combustion process. The energy released by combustion moves the pistons of the engine and transfers power to the wheels of your vehicle.

The importance of the injector system:

Engine performance: a properly functioning fuel injection system ensures that the engine operates at peak efficiency and delivers the desired power.

Fuel economy: Injectors save fuel by injecting exactly the amount of fuel you need.

Emission reduction: Efficient combustion helps reduce exhaust emissions and air pollution.

Vehicle life: An injection system that is regularly checked and maintained extends the life of your engine.

Failures of the injection system:

Clogging: Contaminated fuel or prolonged use of the fuel injectors can cause the injectors to clog. This can lead to problems such as reduced engine performance, smoky exhaust fumes and starting difficulties.

Leaks: Leaks in the injectors can lead to fuel leaks and engine failure.

Electrical defects: Faults in the injector control module or problems with the electrical connections to the injectors can cause the injectors to malfunction.

Maintenance of the injection system:

Change the fuel filter regularly: a dirty fuel filter can cause the injectors to clog. It is therefore important to change the fuel filter at the intervals recommended by the manufacturer.

Use quality fuel: Poor quality fuel can lead to clogging and corrosion of the fuel injectors. It is therefore important that you always buy fuel from reliable petrol stations.
